Being Safe on Your Mobility Scooter

Being Safe on Your Mobility Scooter

_______________________________________________________________________________

Get to Know Your Mobility Scooter

Before you head out on your first journey with your scooter, make sure you know how it works and what all of the controls are. It’s extremely important to read the manual before using the scooter to ensure you can use it safely.

Be Visible

It’s especially important to be visible throughout the winter months when it’s darker for longer. Some mobility scooters will come with a light, but if you don't then you can buy ones online that easily attach.

Another easy and cheap way to be visible is to purchase reflective stickers to go on the front and back of your scooter to make you visible to cars.

Take Out Mobility Scooter Insurance

Mobility scooter insurance can start from prices as low as £20. It’s worth insuring your scooter to protect it against loss, theft or damage. This can provide peace of mind, especially where you regularly use your scooter.

Maintaining Your Scooter

Although not all scooters will need servicing, it’s always worth getting it checked. We recommend doing this at least once a year.

It’s also important to maintain your scooter according to the instructions in the manual for your scooter to last as long as possible.

Battery maintenance is important too. Replacing the batteries can be expensive so be sure to follow the instructions to get the most out of your batteries as possible.

Be Aware of The Laws

The laws are different for Class 2 and Class 3 scooters so you should know what class your scooter belongs to. This will tell you where you can use your scooter and whether it needs to be registered.

Pay Attention

Mobility scooters can go fast, so as much as you need to consider your own safety you also need to be aware of other people’s safety. This includes looking around whilst driving, especially when reversing, and using your horn to make people aware of your presence.
